Paediatrics
The department of pediatrics is one of the core clinical departments of Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kudu and has been providing services to the community since taken over of this hospital as a federal medical Centre in the year 2000.
The department provides the following services:
1. Provision of paediatric outpatient services. This includes running of outpatient clinics and evaluation of patients that present to the clinics. This is the first point of contact with the department. Patients requiring admission are sent to Emergency Paediatric Unit (EPU) or the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU).
2. Provision of paediatric emergency services: This is given at the EPU and involves initial assessment and subsequent monitoring of children that require admission.
3. Provision of neonatal services: This is delivered via the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU). This unit provides emergency services to newborns up to 28 days of life.
4. Paediatric medical ward provides subsequent care to children admitted via EPU. The unit also admits children with non-life threatening emergencies.
STAFF STRENGTH
The department has 2 Consultants and 9 medical officers (1 Principal Medical Officer and 1 senior medical officer).
It also has two visiting consultants; a pediatric cardiologist and an endocrinologist.
The department also provides various educational activities including
• Weekly Morning reviews
• Weekly Departmental Clinical presentations
• Monthly mortality reviews
• Hospital presentations
• Community tv/radio enlightenment programs
The department of paediatrics has proven over the years to be most disciplined, well-coordinated and organized as it caters for the most delicate and vulnerable age group of the society.
Progress / achievements made in the last four years 2017- Date
1. Capacity building :
A colleague is currently undergoing residency training in A.K.T.H
2. The administration under the able leadership of Professor S.H. Idris has sponsored many staff members of the department for workshops within and outside the state .
3. Many equipments were procured including but not limited to Incubator, phototherapy machines, resuscittaire, oxygen concentrators and etc.
These developments have greatly improved health care delivery to children and the staff are more motivated and efficient in discharging their duties.
