Ear Nose and Throat (ENT)

The Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Department of Federal Medical Centre Birnin Kudu is a surgical subspecialty within medicine that deals with the surgical and medical management of conditions of the ear, nose and throat.
The department started shortly after the inception of the hospital by a pioneer ENT Consultant, Prof. A. D. Salisu of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano. The affairs of ENT were later propelled by the only permanent ENT Consultant, Dr. Mohammed Jamiu Kazeem.
The patients load has gradually grown over the years from a few hundred per year to about 2,000 per year. Many of whom have benefited from our out-patient, in-patient and inter departmental consultations.
Besides, most of our treatments focus on functional diseases that affect the senses and activities of eating, drinking, speaking, breathing, swallowing and hearing.
Also, surgical intervention which ranges from Basic ENT procedures, endoscopic sinus surgeries and endoscopic ear surgeries are routine in our Centre.
During our period of growth, the staff strength has grown from a Consultant and a nurse to three ENT doctors (one on training) and 4 specialized ENT nurses.
The development has been putting smiles on the faces of our numerous patients who require the ear to hear, the nose to smell and breath; the throat to swallow, make speech and also breath.
Achievement from 2017 to 2021
Provision of expensive ENT services like endoscopic sinus surgeries, endoscopic ear surgeries and so on in a low social economic setting.
Serving as referral center to neighbouring centres, where ENT services are nonexistent. Increased staff strength from 1 to 6.
